Suntrust Properties, Inc. (SPI) held a golf cup as a fundraiser at the no. 1 golf course in the country, Sherwood Hills Golf Club, last October 17. The tournament aims to support the Philippines’ top MMA team, Team Lakay.
The team, hailing from Baguio City, boasts of not only one but a total of seven former and current world champions. SPI is no stranger to fundraising events as this is the second golf cup it held in support of Lakay’s endeavor to bring home belts from ONE Championship. The first event last year helped in the improvement of Team Lakay’s gym. The Baguio team wishes to help shape the youth and help them stay away from vices by teaching them martial arts. Last Wednesday, the team, together with their Coach Mark Siangao, graced the tournament and expressed their utmost gratitude to the company and all the sponsors. Raffle prizes were also given away that day. Team Lakay’s very own Honorio Banario even won the grand prize and went home with a brand new 40” Smart TV.
Event partners included Davies Paint, CABALCE Electrical Contructors Inc., DE Construction and Development Corp., Sagada Construction Development Corp., and Vision Properties Development Corp. while major sponsors are ARCMIXX Corp., AST Industrial Services & General Merchandise, EMALCO Industries Inc., and Marvel Construction and Supply. This golf cup is expected to generate more proceeds compared to the first cup. The team, players, and sponsors feasted on a sumptuous meal after the tournament.
Winners included John Sicat, Pol Sanchez, Ariel Javelosa, and Nico Valenton for Divisions 1, 2, 3, and 4 respectively with John Sicat being awarded the Most Accurate Drive, Renato Alejandria the Longest Drive and Low Gross, Danny Escares Nearest to the Pin and Atty. Harry Paltongan as overall champion scoring an even-par gross score from the blue tees.
Through these fundraising activities, Suntrust proves to be part of the movement of raising homegrown world champions, with the hopes for Team Lakay that is to join in the pedestal in which Manny Pacquiao and Hidilyn Diaz stand. Suntrust Properties President Atty. Harry M. Paltongan further motivates the team as he vows to continue the Lakay Cup as long as they continue to bring pride to the Filipinos.
Team Lakay lightweight star Eduard “Landslide” Folayang will have the opportunity to reclaim the ONE Lightweight World Champion when he meets Singaporean Amir Khan for the vacant world title on ONE Championship's November card at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Folayang is currently riding a two-fight win streak with back-to-back unanimous decision wins over a pair of gritty Russian grapplers. Khan, who won 8 of his last 9 fights is challenging for the title for the first time in his young career.
